Excerpts from the Booklet
When Should I see a Doctor?
If you think you have been exposed to HCV or are at-risk, see your
doctor and ask for a hepatitis C antibody test. It is a simple blood
test. If you test positive your doctor may send you to a gastroenterologist
or a hepatologist for further examination.
Liver Biopsy
The word biopsy strikes fear in the minds of most people. The fear
is much worse than the procedure. Biopsy is considered the “gold
standard” for gathering information about the condition of the liver.
Liver Transplant
Encourage everyone to sign an organ donation card and share their
wishes with their families. In most states, signing the card is
NOT enough. Your family must give their permission when the
time comes.
Substance Abuse
Substance abuse is recognized as one of the most significant
risk factors for hepatitis C virus. An IV drug user can contract
HCV the very first time a syringe is shared with an infected person.
What is the Americans With Disabilities Act?
The ADA is a Federal law prohibiting discrimination against “qualified
individuals with disabilities” in all employment practices. Employers
with 15 or more employees are required to comply with the Act.
What kinds of Disability Benefits are Available from the Social
Security Administration to Persons with HCV?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs
that provide cash benefits for disabled persons too sick to work.
